Golf Etiquette Tips

Tip 1- Determine Your Order Of Play

Check with your playing partners to see how they would like to determine order of play when teeing off on the 1st hole.

  • Option 1- Flip the Tee.  A golf tee is thrown into the air and whoever the sharp end is pointing at when it lands has the honor of hitting first. Continue this process until an order of play is established. After everyone has teed off, whoever is furthest away has the right to hit their shot. This continues until the group has completed the hole. The golfer with the lowest score on the previous hole has the honor of teeing off first on the next hole.
  • Option 2- Ready Golf. For this strategy, whoever is ready may tee off first and/or play their shot from the fairway/rough.  This will help with “pace of play” and prevents your group from falling behind the group ahead of you.

Tip 2- Keep A Distance From Players

Golfers find it distracting to see someone in their peripheral vision when addressing the ball.

    • Never stand too close or directly behind a golfer teeing off or hitting their shot.
    • Stand at least 15 to 20 feet slightly behind and to the left/right of a golfer so you are comfortably out of their view.

Tip 3- Remember Your Ball During Play

Easily identify your ball at all times to prevent yourself from hitting another golfer's ball by mistake.

      • Option 1- Remember your brand & ball number
      • Option 2- Write your initials. Use a magic marker and write your initials on both sides of the golf ball.
      • Option 3- Mark with dots or your own marking.

Tip 4- Watch Your Step On The Green

When walking around the green, avoid stepping in someone's “line of putt.” A shoe imprint may cause someone's ball to roll offline and miss.

          • Step over this imaginary line or walk around someone's ball mark to avoid affecting the area on the green where their ball may roll towards the hole.

Tip 5- Be Aware Of The Group Ahead Of You

Occasionally, some golfers hit their ball too soon or are too close to the group ahead of them; causing distractions.

            • When hitting your approach shot, do not hit your ball until the group ahead of you walks off the green, puts their clubs away, and drives out of sight.
            • If you are far enough back to safely hit and not reach the players ahead, then feel free to play your shot.
            • At the next hole, do not drive up to the group while they are teeing off. Any noise the carts make can be distracting to players who are about to hit or are mid-swing. Hang back a little bit until they have all teed off.
